Chapter 22
As the boat entered the waters, I could feel the nervous energy flowing off of all of us. Long gone was the jovial moods from yesterday. Any thoughts of frolicking in the sand and surf were long forgotten. Illipâs death continued to haunt us all. Part of me hated to leave him behind.
I could feel the muscles in my body tensing in response to the stress around me. My stomach was queasy, I was certain it was from nerves and not from the rolling water. So much had happened to us since leaving Paradan. We all feared what was looming around the next corner.
It was eerily quiet. The only sounds were of the cool water lapping against the wooden bulkhead of our boat. I suddenly felt warmth brushing against my hand. Looking down I could see Areitâs hand touching mine.
It didnât seem intentional.
He had worked hard at protecting me this far, I was sure he only wanted to finish his assignment. I knew no matter where the final leg of our quest took us, I would never look at Areit the same way.
We were friends now.
Too much had passed between us⦠and so much pain, death and destruction had bonded us forever. I couldnât explain how I felt about Areit, part of me wished I could. Yet, there was a bigger part of me that wanted to pretend I had never met him. I hated the confused feelings floating around my heart. Guilt riddled me for having any thoughts for anyone other than Cassius.
He was my focus, my heart.
I would be lying if I said this quest hadnât changed me, but what would I do with those changes?
There was a sudden movement coming from the stern of the ship.
Areit and I both turned to look at the same moment. Near the back of the ship several of the crew had turned their back from us. The way they were grouped together, which made seeing the distraction impossible. My stomach felt heavy as if someone had deposited a thousand pound boulder inside of it. I felt my head begin to ache, and my heart was constricting, forcing all the blood from me. I wanted to call out and ask what was wrong, but my voice was useless. They were all focusing on several different areas. I looked again trying to discern what had their complete attention.
There was nothingânot even mist rising from the waters.
Then came the echoing sounds of the first splash!
I whirled around searching for what had caused the break of silence. It was then that I saw one of our crew dive into the aqua waters. Another splash shattered the silence. Running to the side of the ship, I searched to see if they needed help. They were nowhere to be seen. Not even a ripple in the water remained. My heart raced.
Once again there was another splash, one after another.
What was happening?
Slowly, every member of my expedition was disappearing. I watched as Akin leapt from the boat as if he was going for a leisurely swim on a summer day.
